Rob Burton is BBC Young Musician Semi-Finalist
After winning the Woodwind Category Final of BBC Young Musician 2018 against clarinetist Tom Myles, flautist Marie Sato, bassoonist Francis Bushell and recorder player Eliza Haskins, Rob qualified for a place in the Semi-Final of the competition.
Aired on Friday 11th May at 7:30, the Semi-Final was where the five category winners competed against each other; fighting for three places in the Grand Final. Rob was one of the three winners, who would go on to perform concertos with the CBSO in Birmingham's Symphony Hall.
The Semi-Finalists were:
- Matthew Brett, Percussion
- Isobel Daws, Brass (Trombone)
- Lauren Zhang, Keyboards (piano)
- Maxim Calver, Strings (cello)
- Robert Burton, Woodwind (saxophone)
The Semi-Final took place in the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Robert Burton wins Young Musician Woodwind Final
Robert Burton won the BBC Young Musician 2018 Woodwind Final, which was broadcast on BBC TV.
Rob was one of five finalists. The panel of judges comprised of Emma Johnson (clarinettist and a BBC Young Musician winner in 1984), Juliette Bausor (Principal Flautist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra) and Kerry Andrew (composer).
Robert will now take part in the semi-final of the competition, where he will meet the other category finalists. Three will be selected to go through to the grand final.
BBC Young Musician Woodwind Finalist!
Over the last few months, Rob has been competing in two rounds of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year 2018 competition taking place in St.Martin in the Fields, London, and Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff.
The latter round of the competition involved the the final 25 woodwind players. For this, Rob performed music by Robert Muczynski and Pedro Iturralde. Despite the standard being incredibly high, Rob's performance was successful in granting him a place in the Woodwind Category Final, talking place in March 2018, where he will compete against the top five woodwind players in the competition.
